Your heart doesn’t love cannabis as much as your brain might. A recent study in JAMA Cardiology found that both smoking marijuana and eating THC-laced edibles could mess with how your blood vessels work. That is bad news for your heart health.
Researchers tested 55 healthy adults who didn’t smoke cigarettes or hang around secondhand smoke. Some smoked weed, some took THC edibles, and some stayed clean. Then they ran vascular tests. The results were loud and clear.
THC Might Be Clogging Up Your Blood Flow
Your blood vessels are lined with endothelial cells. These cells are like traffic cops, keeping blood moving smoothly to your heart. But in the study, weed users showed ‘endothelial dysfunction.’ That means the traffic cops went off duty, and the flow slowed down or even got blocked.
Once these cells stop doing their job, it gets easier for plaque to build up in your arteries. Plaque is sticky and dangerous. It clogs vessels and leads to heart attacks. Not a fun way to find out your weed habit has consequences.
Vascular function dropped by 42% in people who smoked marijuana. But it dropped even more, 56%, in those who ate THC edibles. That surprised the researchers. Most people think edibles are safer because there is no smoke.

Your heart doesn’t care how THC gets in. It still reacts.
Same Damage as Tobacco
Dr. Matthew Springer, one of the study’s lead authors, didn’t mince words. He says that what they saw in marijuana users looked a lot like what tobacco does to the heart. That is a big deal because weed is often seen as the healthier choice.
But this study shows that your heart might not agree. Springer was clear. They didn’t prove that cannabis causes poor heart function. But they saw a strong link.
The researchers picked people who didn’t smoke cigarettes or hang out with people who did. That way, the results would show what THC alone does to the body. And what they found still pointed to big problems for the heart.
This cuts through one of the biggest excuses weed users make: “It is not tobacco.” True. But that doesn’t mean it is harmless. THC might be taking a different road to the same bad destination, early heart disease.

Your Heart Hates Plaque
Let’s go back to that endothelial dysfunction. Once those cells get lazy or damaged, your blood vessels become inflamed. That is how plaque forms. It sticks to your vessel walls and narrows the space your blood can travel through.
Over time, this makes your heart work harder just to do its job. That raises your risk for a heart attack, stroke, or other serious problems.
Most people expect bad news from smoking. Smoke hurts your lungs, right? But this study shows THC is not just a lung thing. It is a circulation thing. That means it is more about how blood moves and how your heart keeps up.
It doesn’t matter whether it comes from a joint or a cookie, THC impacts your blood vessels.
